Getting Children with Asthma Ready for child care

Is your child with asthma ready and safe to go to the child care center?

1. Complete a pre child care physical:

  • Have your doctor/nurse practitioner sign authorization for the child care provider to give asthma medication if needed.
  • Work with your doctor or nurse practitioner to get an extra inhaler and spacer, or nebulizer medicine, and tubing for child care.
  • Ask that your doctor or nurse practitioner complete an Asthma Action Plan for your child and bring a copy to the child care provider.

2. Does your child know how to:

  • Identify early warning signs of an asthma episode and tell an adult
  • Use a Peak Flow Meter (or beginning to learn)
  • Use an inhaler with spacer (or beginning to learn)
  • Identify things that make their asthma worse and how to avoid them

3. Contact the child care provider before the first day:

  • Discuss your child's asthma and emergency plan with the child care provider
  • Sign authorization for your child to receive medication at the child care center
  • Bring the prescription labeled medication to the child care provider
