Getting Children with Asthma Ready for child care
Is your child with asthma ready and safe to go to the child care center?
1. Complete a pre child care physical:
- Have your doctor/nurse practitioner sign authorization
for the child care provider to give asthma medication if
needed.
- Work with your doctor or nurse practitioner to get an
extra inhaler and spacer, or nebulizer medicine, and tubing
for child care.
- Ask that your doctor or nurse practitioner complete an
Asthma Action Plan for your child and bring a copy to the
child care provider.
2. Does your child know how to:
- Identify early warning signs of an asthma episode and
tell an adult
- Use a Peak Flow Meter (or beginning to learn)
- Use an inhaler with spacer (or beginning to learn)
- Identify things that make their asthma worse and how to
avoid them
3. Contact the child care provider before the first day:
- Discuss your child's asthma and emergency plan with the
child care provider
- Sign authorization for your child to receive medication
at the child care center
- Bring the prescription labeled medication to the child care
provider
