NAEPP Updates Guidelines on Management of Asthma in Pregnant Women CME on
MEDSCAPE
The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program
(NAEPP) has updated their guidelines on the management of asthma in pregnant
women, according to an executive summary published in the January issue of
the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. These guidelines are similar
to those for standard asthma in that they emphasize stepped care and similar
medications, but they also mandate good asthma control during pregnancy.
The guidelines are available online at:
http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/prof/lung/asthma/astpreg.htm
Poorly controlled asthma can cause serious complications and problems for both the pregnant
woman and the fetus, including preeclampsia, increased risk of infant death, premature birth,
and low-birth weight.
