Getting Children With Asthma Ready for Kindergarten

  1. Complete a pre-kindergarten physical.
    1. Have your doctor/nurse practitioner sign authorization for the nurse to give asthma medication in school if needed.
    2. Work with your doctor or nurse practitioner to get an extra inhaler and spacer, or nebulizer medicine and tubing for school.
    3. Ask that your doctor or nurse practitioner complete an Asthma Action Plan for your child, and bring a copy to the school nurse.
  2. Does your child know how to:
    1. Identify early warning signs of an asthma episode and tell an adult.
    2. Use a Peak Flow Meter (or beginning to learn).
    3. Use an inhaler with spacer (or beginning to learn).
    4. Identify things that make their asthma worse and how to avoid them.
  3. Contact the school before the first day:
    1. Discuss you child's asthma and emergency plan with the school nurse.
    2. Sign authorization for your child to receive medication in school.
    3. Bring the prescription labeled medication to the school nurse.
